HOW TO BUILD A PIXIES, FAIRIES, GNOMES AND ELVES LETTERBOX

Go to a craft or hardware store and buy a packet of coloured matchsticks and a bottle of Aquadhere or wood glue. Place a piece of paper on the work surface, show the children how to line up the matchsticks next to each other until they make a square and squeeze over some glue. Make 4 square sections for the walls and, using the same technique, make 2 rectangle sections for the roof. The roof needs to be big enough to open so little letters can be sent and received. Allow to dry. Paint the match-sticks with a mixture of 1 part Aquadhere or wood glue and 1 part water to seal.

Put the letterbox at the bottom of the garden and encourage the children to write letters to the pixies, fairies, gnomes and elves. Each day they can check the letterbox to see if the pixies have written back. There could be letters about how important it is to clean your teeth in the morning and why it’s good to clean up your room, or they may contain news about how many pixie parties there have been and who was there. This encourages reading, writing and tidying the room.
