CHAPTER 16

Plan of Attack

A sign has appeared on the double doors leading into the fourth-grade wing. In bold type, it warns that there are seventy-five days left until the NYS Science Performance Exam and eighty-two days left until the NYS written science exam. It is in the network’s trademark orange color and font, and spiral-bound so that the number of days can be flipped from now until the day of the test at the end of May. A nearly identical sign hangs in Albert Barabas’s classroom: forty-two days until the state ELA exam and sixty-two days until the math exam. Two more posters, also network-issued, hang on either side of the smartboard. One is labeled “Math Plan of Attack”; the other, “ELA Mastery Plan of Attack.”

MATH PLAN OF ATTACK

While working through a problem, a true mathematician always thinks carefully to ensure they are solving accurately.

I read the problem to make sure I understand it.
