BECOMING A UNITARIAN

Dana married at thirty. Her husband George’s career as an attorney presented an opportunity in Philadelphia. The change was hard (“no tall buildings!”) until she started working for Family Services. Then their daughter was born and, when she was three, asked, “Who’s the Lord, Mommy?”

I thought about her education. I went to the Quakers first and found it too somber. I read about Unitarians in the newspaper and investigated. I found there was nothing I’d have to let go of, or say “Oh, I don’t believe that!” George, whose mother was Jewish, didn’t have a problem with it. So that’s how I became a Unitarian. There are times I’m jealous of the focus in Judaism on education and philanthropy.

Years of social work, parenting, a divorce after twenty years, and a long-term relationship were all times of challenge and continuing personal growth.
