Jake’s face shows nothing as he nods at Maurice and leaves the kitchen.

“How are you?” Maurice asks me, stepping up to cup my face in his hand.

“I’m wonderful.” I smile.

“Ahhh.” He nods. “Wonderful to be home or is there something else? Someone else, perhaps?”

Heat warms my cheeks and I look down. “Everything.” I sigh.

“Good.” He smiles and nods, taking a step back from me. “Now tell me how much work we have to do on this house.”

“Well, actually . . .” I don’t hide my excited smile. “Jake has kind of put himself in charge of the renovations. Maybe you could get him to show you around.”

“Well, sounds like a good idea.” He winks and heads back to the living room.

When I step out of the kitchen, Jake and Maurice are heading down the hallway, heads together and faces serious as Jake points at the walls and ceiling.

“So . . .” I address the four remaining helpers who are now sitting on the floor in my living room, which Brooke has already vacuumed. “Shall we get started? The quicker we get it done, the quicker it’s over.”

Everyone except Tate jumps up. He grumbles and staggers to his feet. “I housed you for three months. Is that not enough? I have to help you unpack too?”

“Well, if you don’t help me I’ll have to stay at your place.”

“Daisy, baby, start unloading the truck,” Tate calls out, and I laugh and shake my head, following him out the front.

It doesn’t take longer than a few hours to move me back in. With everyone chipping in and me only wanting to set up the bare necessities, like my bed, we were done in no time. We decide to leave all the furniture covered in the middle of the rooms, as I want to start painting as soon as possible. Maurice left earlier and promised to bring more food around later in the week. And currently, we are all sprawled around the living room floor, empty beer bottles spread throughout.

“What time you picking up Hallie?” Harper asks, sitting across the room, leaning against the wall.

“Before dinner,” I tell her. “We’re going out to celebrate.”

“Make sure you take those pastries Maurice made for her,” Tate says.

“She is going to love them.” Jake smiles. “She has a sweet tooth.”

“Did Harper mention a girls’ night out?” Brooke asks from her spot lying on Saxon’s lap.

“Yeah, she did say something. What were you thinking?”

“Low key. Champagne and gossip.”

“And wedding plans,” Harper adds.

“Oh, yes,” I agree eagerly. “Sounds perfect to me.”

“If you go to Henry’s club on a Friday night, it’s more of a lounge bar than the club it is on Saturdays,” Saxon adds.

“Really?” Brooke asks, excited. Henry is a client of Saxon’s, and we have had girls’ nights out dancing at his club a few times now.

“Yeah. Soft music, low lighting, relaxed atmosphere. Everything you girls need for a night of talking about useless topics.”

“Useless topics? Like our wedding?” Brooke sits, removing her head from his lap, her hands on her hips.
