Blackbeard lying dead on the deck of Maynard’s sloop, from an illustration in Frank Stockton’s Buccaneers and Pirates of Our Coast. Artists have commonly taken liberties with the facts in order to evoke a sense of action, and this illustration, showing a ship instead of a sloop, exemplifies the practice. Maynard, left, should be armed with a cutlass instead of a broadsword, and it would be bent or broken. Blackbeard, according to one newspaper at the time, was killed by decapitation. As such, his head should be lying on the deck, or already held by its beard or locks by a jubilant pirate-hunting seaman.
