Before you go, be sure you’re carrying enough cash or credit to cover not only the food but also the tax and tips. Don’t forget that if you’re going to be drinking, there is often a separate liquor tax in addition to your food tax.

If you’re worried about affordability, call the restaurant ahead of time to check on their prices—and don’t feel shy about suggesting a less expensive restaurant, if necessary: “Hey guys, would you mind going to Chez Pacific instead? I think it’s a little more in my price range.” Calculating how much you can afford to spend before heading to dinner will ensure that you don’t suffer the embarrassment of coming up short on your share of the meal.
