Pitfall #7: Promoting a Person Who Cannot Empathize into a Supervisor Position

Apart from people with particular mental health issues, including autism and schizophrenia, every person is capable of learning to become more empathetic. But some people have no desire to develop their capacity to become more empathetic.

Both through conversations with your employee and by observing professional growth or stagnation over time, you will be able to discern if the person desires to learn to be more empathetic and grow into a leadership role. Do not promote anyone to a supervisory position who has no desire to learn how to become more empathetic toward others. One unempathetic supervisor can do serious damage to the employees’ morale.

The ability to relate and respond to the feelings of another person is a key indicator of an emotionally and mentally healthy individual. Bowlby puts it even more strongly: “The capacity to make intimate emotional bonds with other individuals is regarded as a principle feature of effective personality functioning and mental health.”31

If a manager both refuses to empathize with one’s subordinates or refuses training to become more empathetic, the organization needs to remove the supervisory aspects of his position, if not move the person to a different role altogether.
