Days later I lean on the bedroom windowsill and idly watch snowflakes gather on the gravel drive below. I burn at the thought of Nick overhearing us the other night. I’ve been unable to sleep. I half expected him to turn up and bang his fists on the front door, demanding to know whose baby it was. Plus, to make matters worse, Susie insists that I tell him. How do I do that after one foolish drunken night? I sigh hard, thinking about it. I then cast my eyes to the flashing lights on the tree in the neighbour’s house across the road. This is a Christmas nightmare. With my dressing robe sleeve, I dab the corners of my eyes. Should I even bother trying my husband’s mobile again?
