TEN

The next day at school, Ariyon wasn’t there to meet me before class. That was to be expected, but it still hurt.

Mrs. Reebus cleared her throat and began to hand out nicely printed flyers that reminded me of The Gilded City newspaper. I glanced at the heading of the flyer:

Battle skill training camp. Meadowbrook Mountains. Tournament.

“We have an exciting opportunity!” she said. “Starting Friday we will go, as an entire school, to the Meadowbrook Mountains for an intensive training camp and tournament to hone our skills out in nature.”

Eden and I shared a look. This was what the Queen had thought up to make sure the students weren’t on campus during the next attack and to be sure not to tip off our rat or spook anyone?

“Canoes!” Blair yelled, and everyone turned to look at her like she was insane. She looked at me. “I haven’t been to the Meadowbrook Mountains since I was seven, but I remember the beautiful canoes along the riverbank.”

Oh. This was where we would find the Shadow Blade.

Nerves cinched in my gut as I nodded at her. This was it. Everything was falling in place. I should have been excited because it meant I was one step closer to finding the weapon that would help me defeat the Nightlings. But it also meant my death loomed over me. I swallowed hard, thinking of leaving Ariyon and Eden and everyone behind. But I also knew that by leaving them behind, it meant I would save everyone.

“This is perfect. Everything is going to plan!” Eden whispered beside me.

I gave her a smile and nodded, trying to hide my sadness.

‘We could tell her,’ Yanric said from where he perched on the windowsill outside, peering in at me.

‘No way. She’ll be devastated and won’t sleep, reading every book in existence to try and stop the inevitable.’

He went silent then. What I needed to do was push this out of my mind and focus on finding the Shadow Blade. Focus on the task at hand.

Ariyon was already distancing himself from me, and it seemed as if my death was near, so maybe that was best.

“Now something unique about this training camp is the tournament,” Mrs. Reebus said.

I snapped my attention back to the flyer.

“For the first time in almost two decades, we will be reinstituting an old tradition where we meet up with students from another school to compete with them for a prize!” She sounded excited but Blair just groaned.

Eden raised her hand. “What school?”

The teacher cleared her throat. “Helmsdale Institution. They come from the southern part of our realm and we will be nice hosts.”

Blair’s eyebrows rose up and she looked back at Eden and I in surprise mixed with a little fear. I’d have to get that story later.
