Chapter Six: A Special Gift

The morning is uneventful as I look over some paperwork from an older couple who have applied for a bank loan. They own their own house outright and they need a little help putting a new roof on it. However, the thirty-thousand-dollar price tag causes me some pause as I consider their ages.

“He’s sixty-eight,” I say while shaking my head. “And collecting retirement.” It seems that they could make the payments with ease, but I recall an issue just a few months ago when an older woman passed away after paying back only half of a loan we had given her. The woman’s children are fighting us legally in order to keep us from collecting on what is due to the bank. Though I know it will be resolved at some point, it could be a year or two and the loss of that money for that time means a financial loss for the bank.

Although I’m concerned, I stamp and approve the loan. The fact is, it would be illegal to refuse the loan based on the couple’s ages. They have the financial capability to make the payments over the ten-year life of the loan. I simply worry about their ability to outlive it.

My office door opens suddenly and in walks a familiar person. “Tabitha?”

“Hey, Luke,” she says while closing the door behind her. “I’m sorry to bother you at work like this, but I took the rest of the day off so that I could show you something.” She makes her way to my desk and has a seat in front of me. There is a small square box in her hand. Tabitha places it on the desk in front of me and says, “I got this by special delivery at work today.” She opens the box and my eyes widen as I see what appears to be a very expensive necklace.

“Holy shit,” I say as I pull the box toward me. “You got it at work?”

“Yeah. And honestly, it freaks me out a little.” Her blue eyes study me as she asks, “Did you send it?”

I look up and shake my head while chuckling. “Uh, no. I can’t afford anything like this.” I reach over and pick up my cell phone. After taking a picture of the necklace, I upload the image and do a search online. It comes back to a jewelry store in the city. “Fuck, honey.”

“What? Did you find it?” Tabitha stares at me as she awaits my answer.

I nod my head. “Yeah, I found it. This thing is not cheap.” I turn the screen of the phone so that she can see what I’ve found. “Five thousand dollars, Tabby.”

“Oh, shit.” Her face turns a bright red. “Who would send this to me, Luke? I don’t know anyone who could afford this.”

“I don’t know.” I look at the necklace closely. “Diamonds and sapphires. This isn’t a knockoff.” My eyes turn back to my wife. “Are you sure you don’t have an admirer at work?”

She narrows her eyes.
