“The usual, Sheriff?” asked Sheri Newton.

Sheri owned Flowers and Such, the only flower shop in Fox Haven. I was a frequent customer of hers, since I occasionally dropped by to buy roses to place on my brother’s grave.

“A dozen white daises, and can you wrap that for me, please?” I asked.

The 62-year-old woman’s eyebrows shot up.

“Certainly, Sheriff. Are these daises for a certain special someone you were seen with at Founder’s Day last week?” Sheri asked.

There was no use denying the truth. Town gossip usually spread like wildfire. From my personal experience, it was best to get it out of the way.

“Ian mentioned his favorite flowers are white daisies. Do you think it’s strange of me to give him flowers?” I asked.

“Not at all. I’m sure Ian would appreciate these lovely daisies.” Sheri lovingly wrapped the flowers before handing it to me.

The door to the shop opened. I momentarily tensed, recognizing that repulsive scent immediately. Even Sheri’s eyes widened slightly.

I could smell her fear and got a little irritated. Most of the supernatural denizens in town did their best to get along with the humans.

Tanner wasn’t well liked for a reason. He treated humans like second-class citizens.

“What can I do for you?” Sheri asked.

I had to give the woman some credit. She maintained her professional cool despite the fact Tanner didn’t bother hiding his scowl or the angry energy coming off him in waves.

Humans could sense it when a paranormal did magic or when shifters let out a little of their aura. Randall once described the sensation to me as unpleasant.

“Mind your business, you old hag. I just came in here to say hi to the sheriff,” Tanner said.

At those blunt and unkind words, Sheri stiffened.

“There’s no need to be rude to Sheri. Let’s continue this conversation outside,” I suggested.

Knowing he was a bully, I half expected Tanner to dismiss my suggestion, so it surprised me when he voluntarily stepped out of the store.

Tanner fingered his missing ear as I joined him on the sidewalk. The ear he lost during his fight with Dane.

“What do you want, Tanner?” I asked. “Are you finally coming clean about your involvement with Aaron’s murder, or do you have something to say about Maurice Porter?”

“None of those things,” Tanner said dismissively. His carefree attitude pissed me off a little, but I stayed my tongue. Tanner went on, “I just wanted to point out that your little human’s been a busy little bee.”

“What?” I asked.

I certainly didn’t like the way Tanner said ‘your little human’ or the fact Tanner was suggesting he’d been paying close attention to Ian’s activities.

What was Tanner implying, anyway? That Ian was sniffing around town? He hadn’t mentioned anything to me.

Realizing Tanner was watching me closely, I schooled my expression to one of indifference, not wanting Tanner to sense my confusion.

“Is that all?” I asked.

“Tell your human he should learn to be a little more careful. It’s not wise, sticking his nose in affairs that isn’t his,” Tanner said.

Icy rage swept over me.
