This is the west side Central Avenue, and this postcard displays Dwight Heard’s legacy in Phoenix—the Security Building, the Hotel San Carlos, and the Heard Building (with the tower). The Hotel San Carlos still has its original sign at this time. (Courtesy MC.)

Here is an old matchbook advertisement for the hotel. It naturally says, “Air Cooled,” on the front and again on the inside, but then it adds: “All Outside Rooms with Bath. Circulating Ice Water. Coffee Shop. Fireproof Garage.” What all that has to do with Native Americans, though, is not known. (Courtesy MC.)
