Chapter Eleven

Everly’s heart galloped. She let go of his sleeve, and Gem left to do his perimeter check, grumbling the whole time.

A little voice in her head asked her if she knew what she was doing.

“Yes,” she whispered back. “It’s time I let myself have something I want for a change.”

She turned on her side and waited, her eyelids drooping. She was tired but also keyed up. Just when she was beginning to wonder if Gem would return, he strolled back into the room.

“Still awake.”

She didn’t think it was a question but she nodded anyway. “I’m not sleeping until you’re beside me.”

She watched him in the lamplight as he dragged his sweatshirt over his head. She’d seen him shirtless before, and it was quite the sight to behold. Gem had lean, hard muscles, tanned skin with a couple of scars he’d told her were knife wounds, and a profusion of tattoos that weren’t visible until he was shirtless.

He looked every inch the bad boy her mother would completely disapprove of. Which only made the prospect of being with him more exciting, if she were honest. Not that it was her primary reason. Her primary reason was that she’d fallen for him months ago because of the man he was. Gem was a gem. He was worth more than ten Stuart Morrisons. She wished her mother could see that.

He lay a gun on the nightstand after he removed it from the holster at his waist, then pushed his jeans off until he was in his boxer briefs.

Oh God, boxer briefs. On a man with abs that didn’t quit and thighs that filled them out to perfection. She could see the outline of his cock, and her pussy throbbed with need. It’d been too long that she’d been taking care of herself when she had the urge for release. Since moving to Washington and going to work for her mother, she hadn’t had the chance to have many relationships that resulted in sex.

It’d been a long dry spell for Everly Fairhope, Esquire. A dry spell she wanted to end with this man.

Gem frowned down at her. “You sure you want me to get in there with you?”

She pushed the covers back. “Yes, I’m sure.”

“What about Stu?”

Everly frowned. Of course he’d care about her engagement. Maybe she should, too, but it wasn’t real and Stuart didn’t love her. He viewed it like an advantageous merger, same as her mother. “It’s not real,” she said, voicing what she’d sworn she wouldn’t. Not to him, anyway.

His brows arrowed down. “Not real?”

“The engagement,” she flung out. “He didn’t ask, and I didn’t say yes. It’s my mother’s doing. I don’t know what he’s getting out of it, but she’ll have promised him something.”

If she thought she’d seen Gem pissed before, that was nothing compared to now. “Your mother arranged a marriage for you?”

She was beginning to think she’d messed up. She shouldn’t have said anything. “She only wants what’s best for me—”

“No,” he snapped. “She fucking doesn’t.
