Chapter 8

The following night, Andi led her “First 100 Days on the Job” class in role-playing exercises, breaking up the students into small groups where they worked through scenarios they might encounter the first days of their civilian jobs. Afterward, the class reformed and made up a collective list of “Do’s and Don’ts”, some hilarious. At the end of the class, Andi was feeling relaxed and happy. No one in the class gave her “stalker vibes”, and Inferno seemed to be relaxed as well.

Mars and Inferno followed her home and didn’t see any vehicles seemingly trailing her there, and they left shortly after delivering her to her doorstep.

Zig and Andi snuck into her bedroom and made love. When they both lay dragging in air after a particularly invigorating session, Zig lay on his side, his head supported on one hand as he smoothed his other hand over her side. “So, are you sure you don’t want the guys shadowing you at work tomorrow?”

She nodded. “I have the campus cop. He’s been there every night to escort me to my car. I’ll be all right. And you guys can’t keep doing this. I think my stalker gave up.” She sighed when he cupped her breast and gave her nipple a rub with this thumb. “Next week, I’ll be on my own, but you’ve given me peace of mind, what with all the equipment you installed.”

“I may be going back to work, but we need to think about what that means for us.”

She studied his expression while she thought about what he might mean. They’d pushed off discussing exactly what “this” was, simply enjoying their time together. The stalker situation had been a convenient excuse, but that’s all it was. She had a son to consider, along with her own future. “Zig…”

He leaned toward her and kissed her mouth. “Let me say this. I know, before this, you were pulling away, from me and the team. I could see it every time I showed up on your doorstep. You were getting ready to give me the boot, weren’t you?”

She released a shaky breath and nodded. He pressed a finger against her lips, telling her to let him finish.

“I walked around with this pit of dread in my belly, because I wasn’t ready. I couldn’t envision not being in your lives. However, if you had told me to back off, I would have, because I do want what’s best for you and Jeremy. I want you both to be happy.”

Her eyes stung at the rasp in his voice.

“I want forever, Andi, but I don’t want you to feel like you have to keep me around longer than you really want because you’re afraid to hurt my feelings. I’m a big boy. You’ll leave a hole in my heart whether it’s tomorrow or six months from now. I just want you to know, I can be in the now. If that’s how you want it.”

He slipped his arms around her, and she pressed her cheek against his chest, listening to the comforting beat of his heart.
