Izzy stared at her laptop screen, waiting for Eric to sign on. She’d been out to get diapers—something that appeared to evaporate overnight—and formula. Erica ate every meal like it was her last one before facing a firing squad. Izzy worried that she might have been a little underfed during her time with the Crushes, but she couldn’t place any blame. Thomas had had his hands full. She needed to remember to tell Eric that Ava had been hospitalized again, this time with a serious urinary tract infection. She was quite concerned for the older woman’s health. Actually, for both of the Crushes. She’d invited Thomas to take the guest room as it couldn’t be good for him to spend his nights in Ava’s hospital room, but he’d declined. He hadn’t wanted to leave Ava’s side, even for a meal. She made time to check on him every day, and Ava’s condition wasn’t improving. Losing Ava after losing his daughter would be quite the blow to Thomas, she imagined.

“Dada will be calling soon,” she said to Erica as the baby chowed through another bottle of formula. “I have to be honest with you, Erica. I never gave the first thought to whether I would breastfeed if I had a kiddo like you, but with the way you eat, it’d have to be cheaper.”

Erica sucked on the nipple with force, drawing out the last drops.

Izzy pulled the nipple from the baby’s mouth with a pop. “Not gonna give that up easily, huh?” she said, as she raised Erica to her shoulder. After washing too many tops with formula dripping down her back. Izzy had trained herself to use a burp cloth every time. Also, on her last trip to Walmart for diapers, she’d picked up some inexpensive shirts for her, and some darling outfits for Erica. There hadn’t been close to enough clothes in the suitcase. The thought to ask Thomas where all Erica’s clothes were had passed her mind, but the poor man was stretched to his limits. Where the rest of the baby’s clothes were was unimportant right now. Izzy could afford everything Erica needed.

Her computer dinged with an incoming call. Her heart leaped into her throat, and then practically ran around her chest with excitement. She really had to get herself under control. This was a fake marriage to help Eric get custody of his daughter. She had to remember that. Still, there was no faking the smile that bloomed on her lips.

“Hello, Dada,” she said after clicking on the clink. To her shock and dismay, it wasn’t Eric’s face filling her monitor. It was Heath’s.

She reangled the computer camera away from her shoulder. “Heath. This is a surprise.” It was then she realized how serious his face was. Adrenalin-fueled fear flood her. She held on tight to Erica’s back. “What’s wrong? What happened? Is he dead?”

“No, no. He’s not dead. I wouldn’t have called you if he was, but something happened, Izzy. He was hurt.
