â« Coming Home â¬
Izzy stared at her laptop screen, waiting for Eric to sign on. Sheâd been out to get diapersâsomething that appeared to evaporate overnightâand formula. Erica ate every meal like it was her last one before facing a firing squad. Izzy worried that she might have been a little underfed during her time with the Crushes, but she couldnât place any blame. Thomas had had his hands full. She needed to remember to tell Eric that Ava had been hospitalized again, this time with a serious urinary tract infection. She was quite concerned for the older womanâs health. Actually, for both of the Crushes. Sheâd invited Thomas to take the guest room as it couldnât be good for him to spend his nights in Avaâs hospital room, but heâd declined. He hadnât wanted to leave Avaâs side, even for a meal. She made time to check on him every day, and Avaâs condition wasnât improving. Losing Ava after losing his daughter would be quite the blow to Thomas, she imagined.
âDada will be calling soon,â she said to Erica as the baby chowed through another bottle of formula. âI have to be honest with you, Erica. I never gave the first thought to whether I would breastfeed if I had a kiddo like you, but with the way you eat, itâd have to be cheaper.â
Erica sucked on the nipple with force, drawing out the last drops.
Izzy pulled the nipple from the babyâs mouth with a pop. âNot gonna give that up easily, huh?â she said, as she raised Erica to her shoulder. After washing too many tops with formula dripping down her back. Izzy had trained herself to use a burp cloth every time. Also, on her last trip to Walmart for diapers, sheâd picked up some inexpensive shirts for her, and some darling outfits for Erica. There hadnât been close to enough clothes in the suitcase. The thought to ask Thomas where all Ericaâs clothes were had passed her mind, but the poor man was stretched to his limits. Where the rest of the babyâs clothes were was unimportant right now. Izzy could afford everything Erica needed.
Her computer dinged with an incoming call. Her heart leaped into her throat, and then practically ran around her chest with excitement. She really had to get herself under control. This was a fake marriage to help Eric get custody of his daughter. She had to remember that. Still, there was no faking the smile that bloomed on her lips.
âHello, Dada,â she said after clicking on the clink. To her shock and dismay, it wasnât Ericâs face filling her monitor. It was Heathâs.
She reangled the computer camera away from her shoulder. âHeath. This is a surprise.â It was then she realized how serious his face was. Adrenalin-fueled fear flood her. She held on tight to Ericaâs back. âWhatâs wrong? What happened? Is he dead?â
âNo, no. Heâs not dead. I wouldnât have called you if he was, but something happened, Izzy. He was hurt.
