Chapter 13

BRENDAN

“You did well today. Very impressive.” I shook McGavin’s hand, giving him a polite smile. “And it’s been good chatting with you.”

That was now the fourth interview I had wrapped up today. This was because I only needed to ask a few brief questions.

All I needed from each interviewee was just enough information to help round out the fluff piece. The rest I could research, if I needed to pad out the post.

I caught McGavin right after he completed his final go-round in the saddle bronc competition.

The rules of the event were simple:

1). Stay on longer than 8 seconds.

2). Keep your hand on the rein.

3). Do not touch the horse - or steady yourself - with your free hand.

And McGavin had done all three with style.

Which was why he currently sat in first place on the leader-board for the event.

“Not a problem,” McGavin answered with a nod of his head and a tip of his cap. The man looked and played the All-American Cowboy part well.

Austin was right about McGavin. The young man — at only 24 years of age — was fast shaping up to be one of the more impressive riders on the circuit.

However, I rarely take things at face value. So, I had been doing a little digging. I had done my homework on all the people I was due to interview at the rodeo show. And McGavin was no exception.

In fact, McGavin wasn’t the grassroots ‘hometown-boy-done-good’ that he liked to portray.

Instead, he was more of a city-slicker than even I could claim to be. Except McGavin's father was a Wall St. Banker. And his mother was an heiress of a small 500 fortune company.

Yet, as they say, you can only beat what they put in front of you. Life had dealt him a good hand, and he played it well. Well enough to play the part of one of the rodeo circuits rising stars.

And he certainly looked the part, I could give him that.

“When will The Alarie Times be publishing the article?” McGavin grinned at me, a touch of swagger in his stance, as he tucked a thumb through his belt-loop.

“In about a month,” I answered, distracted by a tinned voice ringing out from the arena’s loudspeakers. “Thanks again,” I gave McGavin a curt nod before pacing off towards the arena as the next competitor was announced.

“The next rider in the saddle bronc event,” began the announcer, his voice ringing out from the multiple speakers around the arena, “is the man you know and love... Austin Ryder! Give him a hand, folks!”

The crowd erupted with cheers, and I moved closer to the edge in order to get a better look.

Over by the chute, his cowboy hat slung low on his head, Austin was readying himself to begin his final go-round.

Inside the enclosed space of the chute, Austin was seated atop a restless horse. It looked like it was taking three men, (all perched upon the metal gates surrounding the small chute), to help keep Austin seated.
