CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
It was way too early to move when I half registered motion in the bed beside me. The air and the light coming in through the window both had that go-back-to-sleep-itâs-the-weekend feel to it, and my brain tried hard to suck me back under. Except there was a guy in my bed and that tended to wake a person up.
I lifted one heavy eyelid to survey the situation. Erik was propped up on a pillow with his arm tucked behind his head, thumbing lazily through his phone. His naked abs were criss-crossed with sheet lines, and his face was shadowed with stubble, but his eyes were already fully open without even squinting, and his posture screamed morning personâ I couldnât sit up that straight until at least noon.
It was so strange to wake up with someone in bed with me. Not just passed out next to me after sex, but really taking up space and energy the way he did. Hanging out. It reminded me of sleepovers and summer vacationâ nights you stayed up so late that everything seemed hilarious, and someoneâs mom kept coming in to tell you to keep it down, people were trying to sleep. It was an unexpected nostalgia rush to have right after waking up, but it still loosened some tension in my chest.
Usually, I slept hard. I could sleep anywhere, even on long flights, but last night had been an exception. Iâd get just comfortable enough to doze off, and then my mind would shake me awake with some version of Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. Was that real? Get up and make sure. So, Iâd fling my eyes open, double checking that all of this had actually happened, that he was really lying there next to me.
Sometimes he was just breathing low and deep, and sometimes his eyes would flutter open a second, like he could feel me watching, and heâd give me a half-awake sort of smile and reach out in my direction, brushing a hand over my skin or pulling me closer. Feeling comfortable with another person in my bed, hoping they didnât leave in the middle of the night, was a trip.
But lying beside someone without thinking Youâre definitely not the guy⦠Well, I didnât know what to call that, because Iâd never felt it before. I was feeling what everyone else got to feel without even thinking about it, and I was goddamn giddy with possibilities. Vanillas really didnât understand how good they had it.
He glanced my way when I pushed up onto my elbow and smiled when we locked eyes, dumping his phone behind him on the side table without ever looking away from me. Swear to god, he looked like somebody Iâd dream up, not somebody Iâd wake up next to. It fucking hurt to look at him he was so lazy-summer-weekend hot.
âHey. Morning.â He reached over and threaded his hand through the top of my hair, tugging at me playfully. Holy shit was I into thatâ being toyed around with, casual touching that said so much more than I want to fuck you.
