CHAPTER TEN
The Missing Link
As soon as Vega returned to Lady of the Lake School for Girls, she removed the ring. She didnât want any of the staff to see it and recognize it for what it was. Immediately she felt weaker, and it was harder to make her way up the stairs. The school grounds were warded heavily enough to keep Fae and other predators out. Theoretically, she didnât have to be worried about being attacked any longer.
But Fae had found ways to get in before.
Procedure dictated that she needed to go to the principalâs office and fill out an incident report for the Fae attack on the students, as well as her conduct in Serpenmourn, which would probably look like âfightingâ to the principal. If she wasnât timely, Ms. Chamapiwa would report the incident before Vega, and then she would be in even more trouble.
But the moment Vega removed the ring in her teacher dorm room, she was overcome by fatigue. She sat on her bed, the world a narrow tunnel as darkness closed in on her. Sleep overcame her. She didnât fight the dreamless oblivion that swept over her.
She only woke when Malisha Bane shook her. âWhere is she? Whereâs my sister?â
Malishaâs long blond hair was a mess. Her pretty face was pinched up in panic. She had forgotten to wear her white gloves, exposing a pinky finger that had been chopped off the year before.
âHuh?â Vega asked.
Vega had enough sense to wonder how Malisha had gotten past the wards on her door. The idea that Malisha could do so wasnât completely surprising since she was a Merlin-class Celestor like Vega, but the idea that she would dare do so and break their tentative truce was another. Vegaâs fury spiked, despite her groggy state.
Malishaâs blue eyes were full of panic. âWhere is Faina? Didnât she come back with everyone else?â Malisha dug her fingers into Vegaâs arms.
Vega attempted to extricate herself from Malishaâs painful grip, but her limbs were sluggish and heavy.
âYes, of course Faina returned with us,â Vega said, trying to remember if that was actually true. Faina had been in the street with the others, helping the wounded after the battle. She had gathered with the group of students to leave together, herded by their teachers through the forest path.
âWhy canât I find my baby sister? Why havenât any of her friends seen her?â Malisha released Vega.
It was dark outside the window, the shutters open to reveal shimmering stars over the forest. Someone had seen to it that Vega drank in starlight, even if she had been sleeping. She didnât know if that had been Hazel or someone else.
âDid Faina get abducted?â Malisha demanded.
âNo, the Raven Court didnât abduct anyone. Ask Ms. Chamapiwa if she saw her.â Vega drew the blankets around herself. She saw she wasnât wearing her shoes any longer, but she didnât recall removing them.
If she wasnât more tired, she might have cared about who had been in her room, invading her space when sheâd been at her weakest.
