Jaxon
I push Dina behind me and put my arms up as the men advance toward me. My blood’s pumping, and the vein on my neck is twitching.
The first guy comes at me and swings a punch. I duck sideways and thrust my fist into his face. There’s the satisfying sound of breaking bone and he yelps in pain, holding his nose.
It only seems to make him angry, and he comes at me again. Before he can recover, I punch him in the guts and he doubles over.
“Jaxon!”
I turn just in time to dodge a fist. I crouch down and I use my weight to thrust forward, pushing into the guy so he staggers backward. I push forward until he’s leaning over the concrete wall of the bridge. The water rushes below us, and in one heave I could have him over. But I hesitate. Is this what I want Dina to see?
The hesitation costs me. The guy regains his balance and this time I’m the one staggering backwards, the man pushing against me until we’re leaning over the other side of the bridge.
He’s pressing against my chest, and I’m finding it hard to breathe. I pull on all my strength and shove him backwards. He stumbles and drops to the ground.
I’m about to finish him off when I give a quick look to Dina. She’s clasping the jacket around herself, her eyes wide in terror.
Is this the kind of man I want Dina to see me as? A violent brute? I’m supposed to protect people, not beat them up.
I pause, my fist in the air. The man looks at me. He’s on his knees swaying, and blood pours from his nose.
There’s the roar of another bike, and we both look up as the skinny club owner pulls up.
I wait till he gets off his bike, seeing if he’ll call his dogs off.
To my surprise, his eyes flick over to Dina. “You okay?”
She nods at him. “I’m fine, Vinny.”
I see the relief in his face before his gaze fixes on me. “What do you want with Dina?”
“That’s my business,” I grunt.
“You come into my club, you mess the place up, and you steal my newest girl. I’d say that’s my business.”
I can’t be bothered with arguing so I do the quickest thing to shut him up. I pull out my badge.
His eyebrows shoot up. “You gonna arrest me now?”
“I haven’t decided yet.”
I turn to Dina, and she’s looking at me wide-eyed. “You’re a cop?”
Something about the way she says it stops me in my tracks.
“Yes, I’m a cop, honey. I know I don’t always act like one.”
She’s backing away like she’s scared of me.
“I didn’t know you were a cop.” She spits out the word like it’s venom.
I’ve been spat at for being a cop, and I’ve been called all the names under the sun. But never has it bothered me until now. Seeing my angel backing away from me feels like a sledgehammer just slammed into my heart.
“Dina...” I reach out a hand to her, and she flinches.
