FALSE DUN

The phenomenon called false dun was discovered rather recently. False dun horses almost completely match the characteristics of real dun color (see p. 22), except for some important differences (Photos 183 & 184). Horses with one or more of the following traits should be considered false dun:

Visible primitive markings that are absent on both parents.

No sign of primitive markings but offspring that display them strongly.

One or several primitive markings on a horse of a breed in which there isn’t dun color.

A gray horse that shows primitive markings before the graying process.

Noticeable, uneven texture of hair in places where primitive markings would be on very dark base colors (against which primitive markings are not visible).
