DUFF

Duff headed to the Inn.

Simon had ushered him out of the orphanage quickly saying that Simon would give Duff’s goodbyes to the kids. It was so out of character for Simon, it twisted Duff’s gut and increased his fear for Matilda. Why else would Simon want him to leave so quickly.

He made his way past Red’s and saw a shadow by the side. There were always shadows and people lurking on this side of town. But this was also a great spot to watch the orphanage without being seen.

He went past Red’s and then kept going around, instead of continuing past the stables.

A shadow separated from the wall and for a moment Duff swore he saw one of Rin’s family tattoos before the man ran. Had Rin’s family been watching the orphanage? That idea made no sense. Why would they? They were no more interested in orphans than any other Family.

He walked past the stables and headed toward the good side of town.

As he moved, he couldn’t help feeling like he was being followed. He turned once and saw nothing. He needed to get to Matilda and get this emergency cleared up, it was making him paranoid. First Rin’s family watching the orphanage and now him being followed. He shook his head. The sooner he got to the Inn the better.

The biggest of the families lived on this side of town. The Inn was the place they all went to socialize. It was supposed to be neutral. He’d never thought that he would be able to see the inside of it. Maybe he still wouldn’t be able to. Just because Matilda had said to meet him here, didn’t mean he’d actually get to see the inside.

As he approached, a man flew through the window and landed on the dirt. Shattered glass fell around him like glitter. He gaped. He’d never seen someone fly out of a window before.

His family Kraus tattoo was covered with tiny cuts from the glass.

Duff’s heart raced. He stopped in the middle of the street. Before he could decide what to do, the front door banged open.

Z and the crew came out at a dead run.
