Chapter 12

"You know yourself, you can't really complain about having them here. If it weren't for Hope, one of the men would have had to come off their duties to drive my wagon. And that boy has been earning his keep by helping anyone he can with all of the smaller tasks."

James had also broken his arm when he fell, and hadn't been able to drive the wagon for the past few days. Hope had stepped in, and with coaching from the older man, she was managing just fine.

Logan looked over to it now where Hope was hanging out a couple of shirts. One of the cowboys he'd hired was a bit smaller than the rest, and he'd offered Max some clothes to get him through to Oregon. They were still a little big on him, but he just rolled up the sleeves and had been using a piece of rope as a belt.

Hope had run down to the small creek that was running past their camp to quickly wash some of the dusty clothes when they'd stopped for the day. She was even hanging out shirts that belonged to James, and some of the other men.

Smiling to himself, he had to laugh as he imagined what the men were thinking. He was pretty sure none of these cowboys he'd hired had ever had anyone do their laundry while on the trail.

Tomorrow they'd all be smelling like his mother's flowerbed.

"No, I agree. She's done a lot to help out around here. But what am I supposed to do with her and the boy when we get to Oregon? She's determined to pay me back, and I have no earthly idea how she intends to do that."

James grinned at him as he took another sip of his coffee. Luke chuckled quietly as he shook his head, quickly sipping from his own cup when Logan glared in his direction. "What exactly is it that you find so amusing?"

Luke shook his head and put his hand up in the air in mock surrender. "Nothing. Just that it seems to me you can't even see the simplest solution standing right in front of your own face."

Logan squinted at him, crossing his arms in front of his chest as he waited for Luke to elaborate. "Would you care to explain it to me then?"

Frank came over and bent down to pour some more coffee into Luke's cup. He turned to look at Logan with a serious expression.

"I think he's hinting at what the rest of us have all been able to see, even if your own eyes haven't been opened yet."

Rolling his eyes and sighing in exasperation, Logan shrugged. "All right then. Maybe one of you could let me know what has you all grinning like a bunch of fools."

Frank set the pot back on the fold-down shelf of the wagon. He turned back to Logan and looked him in the eye. "Well, what us fools have been able to see is that you're smitten with that woman.
