Chapter 20

“Perhaps we should call it a day and go get a pint?” Auntie Connie suggests, halfway into the lesson. She winks at me and nudges me in the ribs.

“I don’t think cousin Viv or the aunts would take kindly to that, Auntie Connie.” I look at her sternly. “We’ve barely gotten started. Perhaps we’d better cover a few more things before we break.”

“What things?” She looks at me, confused.

Oh, not this again.

“You know, maybe some general witchcraft?” I say. Like maybe a spell or incantation, or anything?

She blinks. “Witchcraft?” She scans the room looking even more lost now.

“Aunt Connie,” I take her by the arm. “Do you know where you are, and who I am?”

“Of course, I do.” She yanks away her arm. “I’m in the Eastlander Bar and you’re my drinkin’ partner.”

Oh, no.

“No, Aunt Connie, you’re here at Cousin Viv and the Aunts’ house, at Hex Hall in Hex Falls, and we’re learning witchcraft together.”

She blinks at me blank and then something dons. “Oh, yeah, right, that’s right!” She slaps her knee. “So what are you teaching me next?” She scowls.

Me teaching, you? Oh, my… “Look, I have an idea. Why don’t we just follow the teachings in the Good Book over here, lesson by lesson.” I walk her over to the family Grimoire, still open to the page of a lesson we’ve not yet covered.

“The Good Book?” She raises a curious eyebrow.

“The family grimoire.”

“The family grim-what?” She scowls.

Oh, sweet stars. “You know what?” I take her by the shoulders and turn her around. “A beer sounds really good right now.”
