Köpskam?
Fashion trends come and go but hereâs one that might surprise you. The newest thing to hit your closet is, well . . . not new! Secondhand is projected to be a one-and-a-half times larger business than fast fashion in ten years, according to a 2019 report from the online clothing store thredUP and retail analytics from Global Data. Used fashion will skyrocket in value to $64 billion in the US, the report predicts, while the market for new fast fashion from brands like H&M and Zara will only reach $44 billion.25 Buying resale appeals to the 74 percent of eighteen-to-twenty-nine-year-olds who prioritize sustainability when shopping. Buying one used item reduces its carbon footprint by 82 percent.26 By 2028, the proportion of used clothing in your closet will have doubled.
The massive shift toward the reuse of our clothing decreases waste, and prioritizes durability over disposability and planned obsolescence. Itâs a real positive step forward in tackling climate change. According to the United Nations, the fashion industry currently produces more carbon emissions than all international flights and sea shipments put together.27 Thatâs a whopping 10 percent of global greenhouse gases, plus it contributes 20 percent of the worldâs wastewater.28 And 35 percent of microplastics released into the worldâs oceans are from the polyester, acrylic, and other synthetic textiles that make up nearly two-thirds of our clothes.29 Shopping for new clothes is so destructive to the planet, the Swedes have a new term to keep you from doing it: köpskamâthe shame associated with shopping or consuming.30
