Chapter 4

Somehow I make it through my tasks. I swear I’m going to get a whole box of extra-long t-shirts. I know now I’m going to need them.

The sun set while we were eating and teasing, so the parking lot is half in shadow. I’m looking ahead, keeping an eye out for big holes, when Beverly cries out. Purely by instinct, I turn, see the red blur of her body, and grab her before she falls on the gravel.

“Are you okay?” I splay my hands, holding her back and bottom. “Did you twist your ankle?”

Playing sports like I did through my younger days, I’ve caught plenty of balls, in mitts and in my hands. But never in my life have I intercepted a person. Luckily my feet stay braced despite the impact of a grown woman full of ribs and all the fixings. Then again, I’m wearing sturdy boots, not the clear and slippery sandals on Beverly’s feet.

“No, just my shoe. The heel broke. My ankle is fine, though. I’m okay.” She looks up at me, her gaze soft and wondering. “Did you just catch me? Out of thin air?”

I scuff one foot but stop immediately when that makes her slip alarmingly to one side. “Uh, yeah. Nothing to it.”

“My knight in shining armor! This is a real rescue!”

“Nothing to it, really. I played a little ball, way back when.” I should set her back on her feet, really I should. But I’m enjoying the adoration in her eyes too much.

With her forefinger, she beckons me closer, speaking once I’m bent in close. “I have a special surprise for you! Get me home, and I’ll show you.”

I waste no time, jumping to get us there. I don’t even give her a chance to test out her ankle. Instead I shift my stance, get a better grip, and swoop her into my arms.

“What? Are you carrying me to your car?”

“Fastest way to get there. Fastest way to get my surprise.”

“Oh, I feel like a princess being saved! From the dastardly gravel of a parking lot, so not like an ogre or anything. But still!” She takes the to-go box from me. “I’m not too heavy? After that huge meal?”

“It’s okay. You’re like exercise. Soon I won’t need to do deadlifts anymore.” I grin. “Since I’m lugging around two hundred pounds of wriggling woman!”

“You said you like women who eat! And I am not -- oh! Good one,” she laughs.

I waggle my eyebrows. “I got you.”

“You got me.” She settles into stillness in my arms. Not deadweight, but an easing, getting comfortable. “You know like ten pounds of me is boobs, right?”

Looking down at her breasts straining at the lace, I have to agree. “Maybe even twenty?”

She hooks her arm around my neck, raising the plump rounds even higher. “Maybe. You could weigh them later if you want.”

She’s so easy to flirt with, lobbing me these fantastic openings. “I’ll weigh them on my mouth and tongue. Gotta inspect each one, closely.”

She giggles and hitches herself up my body.
