“Thanks for the suggestion, Scout,” said AJ, standing in the doorway.

“What did she say?”

“She said it was a good idea. She’s never run a full triathlon before, and she’s never run in a place with a lot of humidity, so she thought it was a good idea. I told her to come out a week before, but she’s got something for work and won’t make it until three days before. Hopefully, all this will be wrapped up by then.”

“You like this girl,” smiled Scout. AJ looked behind him to be sure no one else was listening, then sat down next to Scout.

“If you can’t tell, my dad is a special man. He’s incredibly intelligent but probably falls somewhere on the autism spectrum. My mom was the person who really brought him out of his shell. I’m lucky that I inherited his intelligence, but also my mom’s heart.”

“There’s a ‘but’ in there,” grinned Scout.

“Yea,” he laughed. “But, I’m not very good with women, like he wasn’t. I’m just really awkward.”

Scout stared at the man, looking him up and down. He was nothing short of beautiful. A full head of thick, nearly black hair. His eyes were a piercing blue with hints of green and brown. A granite jaw and cheekbones that could cut glass, he had full, luscious lips. He was stunning.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m sorry,” said Scout, shaking her head. “I’m trying to figure out how you could be awkward with women. I mean, I look at you and see cover model or poster boy for the SEALs.”

“That’s just it, Scout. That’s all women see. A lot of the guys here will tell you it’s the same for them. Women see their physiques or their faces, but not all the hard work that goes into getting our bodies to look like this. They don’t see that we all have college degrees, some of us multiple degrees.

“Women get angry when men judge them by their appearance, but in fairness, women do the same to men. They’re looking for the muscles, or the perfect hair, or the perfect teeth. We’re not so different.”

“I can see that,” said Scout. “But you like her, right?”

“I do. There was just something about her when Hoot and I met with her. I mean, she was beautiful. Long, thick black hair and these big blue eyes. She was wearing running shorts, and I could tell that she was someone who loved to run as well.” Scout smiled at him as he described the other woman.

“What makes you think you’re not very good with women?”

“Easy. My track record,” he scoffed. “Being in the military, any branch, is tough on your social life. A lot of guys get married way too fast, just wanting to have someone waiting for them at home. Others take it as an opportunity to float from one woman to the next. We were all lucky that we had fathers who spoke with us about doing what was right.

“I was a SEAL, but in covert intelligence. I couldn’t talk about my job, which made women crazy.
