“I feel bad we got called out in the middle of lunch with your family.”

“You knew it was bound to happen.” Connor eased the rig into its bay inside Station 1. “James didn’t even look surprised.”

“He looked like he sort of loved it,” Olivia said with a laugh. “Granted, I barely know the guy, but I’m betting he’s an adrenaline junkie just like so many of the smoke eaters I’ve known. I’m surprised he didn’t ask to ride along.”

“He totally would have if Ally wasn’t here with him. I’m sure he died a little inside when we ran out of there and he had to stay behind.”

Olivia was still snickering as she and Connor made their way into the station’s kitchen, where they found James and Ally chatting over the remains of their food.

James lifted his right hand up for Connor to slap. “Hey, y’all. How’d it go?”

“How come you never use ‘y’all’ anymore, Con?” Olivia asked. Sitting, she pulled away the napkin she’d used to cover her salad when their ambulance had been called out. “It’s like the Southern gentleman has been Yankee’d right out of you.”

“The Baltimore accent isn’t Southern.” Connor played up his pronunciation of ‘Bawlamore’ so much that James and Ally laughed as hard as Olivia. “But I guess living here has helped kill it.”

“It comes back a bit when you’ve spent time with your peeps,” Olivia said around a bite of food.

“You’re my peeps,” Connor said with a scoff as he pulled off his insulated vest and took the seat beside her. As he’d suspected, the green stains on his uniform jacket hadn’t come out, which meant he’d be rocking a standard issue wool sweater and vest combo in dark brown until he could get a new jacket set up with regulation patches.

“The call was fine,” he said to James, then shook his head when Ally gestured to the yogurt he hadn’t really been eating before he’d had to run off. “Kid pile up at the skating rink over on Boston Common, mostly bumps and bruises. One little guy managed to slash his hand up pretty good though, so he and his mom are having a heart-to-heart with some of the nice ED docs at Mass General.”

“Poor thing.” Olivia forked up more salad. “I deal with injured kids and their parents all the time on this job, but it’s started to dawn on me that I could be one of those parents one day soon.”

“Hopefully not,” Ally said, sympathy all over her face. “And speaking of you and your soon to be mommyhood, someone dropped off a baby gift while you were out on the call.”

“Really? Oh, my.” Olivia’s eyes went wide as Ally set a pair of white paper bags on the table in front of her. A chain of crocheted flowers decorated the handles of the larger bag, and the familiar purple, blue, and green shades on the petals sent Connor’s heart sinking right past his feet even before he saw the Hook Me logo on the bag’s side.
