Chapter Twelve

‘What are you doing?’ Neve asked.

Robin had doubled in height. Mostly because she had stepped onto one of the benches outside the bar and now held her phone at an odd angle, her tongue stuck out.

‘Your face will freeze that way if you’re not careful, you know.’ So Gran had always told Neve whenever she was particularly moody, at least.

‘I’m taking a selfie!’ explained Robin. ‘Get in with me!’

‘No.’ Neve wasn’t in the mood to have her photograph taken – but then, that was nothing new. She wasn’t in the mood for much at all. Her day on the slopes had been tedious to say the least, and all she really wanted was to crawl into bed and watch a movie. But instead, she had met Robin for a drink at the resort’s bar after her third shift at the bakery – which Robin hadn’t shut up about for even a second since starting out. They’d been squeezing their ski lessons in first thing, though they at least got their evenings together.

‘Grumpy. You sound like my mum.’ Robin pouted and lowered her phone before hopping down from the bench. ‘I haven’t posted anything to my Instagram yet. I needed to make sure I get at least one decent picture.’

‘God forbid you go on vacation without posting it all over social media.’ With a grumble, Neve pushed open the door to the bar, treading snow into the old floorboards as she made her way to the stools. Nick gave her a nod, though he was too busy with a group of customers to approach.

Behind her, Robin sighed. ‘Is something wrong?’

‘No.’ Neve took a seat, scraping her hair back. Her scalp itched from her ski helmet, and she felt grimy and wrong somehow, like she wanted to crawl out of her skin.

‘Are you hungry?’

‘I don’t know.’

‘We can find somewhere to get tea. Sorry, dinner. Keep forgetting I’m in Canada.’

‘I think I’m just going to wait for Nick to finish his shift and take me home.’ Neve barely cast Robin a sidelong glance as she sat down beside her. Neve was afraid that if she did, she’d never stop looking at her. Or worse, she’d realise that she was being silly and pushing Robin away. It wasn’t as though they didn’t have time, still. Robin didn’t leave for another five days yet. The days were just passing too quickly.

‘Fine,’ Robin muttered. ‘I’ll leave you to it.’

Maybe Neve should have let her go. It would have been easier for them both if she did. But she was selfish, and the moment Robin slid off the bar stool, her heart wrenched, and she couldn’t keep from catching her wrist before it was too late. ‘No. Don’t go.’

Robin’s forehead wrinkled with confusion. ‘Then talk to me. Tell me what you want. We can go back to my cabin if you want. Order pizza. Get in the hot tub.’ Her brows lifted suggestively at that.

All of those things sounded better than wallowing in bed. Neve nodded weakly and let Robin pull her back out of the bar by the hand.
