A PIECE OF CAKE was not exactly how Hayley would have termed it. “I feel like I should be wearing a sign around my neck. Get in the Car With This Woman at Your Own Risk.”

Dillon felt a stab of panic. He loved this Blazer. It was the first and only thing he had rushed out to buy for himself when he’d returned to the States. Practical enough to be good in the snow, or take off-road, if the mood struck him, yet good enough on gas and insurance to be economical, it was his baby. He hated the idea of anything happening to it almost as much as he hated the idea of anything happening to Hayley or Christine.

“Surely you jest,” he said.

“Not really.”

Hayley didn’t look like she was kidding, Dillon noted nervously.

“Did I tell you one of my cousins tried to teach me how to drive his sports car once? We spent thirty minutes in a parking lot and I was never able to get it out of gear.”

“So you had a bad teacher.” Dillon shrugged it off. “Put the key in the ignition.”

Hayley rolled her eyes. “It’s already in the ignition,” she pointed out dryly.

“See?” Dillon teased. “You’re already one step ahead of me.”

She shot him a sexy smile. “You’re humoring me.”

“And you’re stalling.”

Hayley closed her eyes, gripped the steering wheel tightly with both hands and repeated stalwartly, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

“Ah, The Little Engine That Could.”

Hayley bowed her head over the steering wheel and seemed to concentrate even harder. Or maybe she was praying. Dillon couldn’t tell.

“Positive thinking works,” she murmured.

It sure did something, Dillon thought wryly.

He and Hayley had only been out in this parking lot for five minutes and already his mind was filled with licentious thoughts. Maybe it was the scent of perfume or the fall of her silky hair across her shoulders. Maybe it was just the thought that they were in a parked car alone at night or the fact that he was attempting to teach her how to drive a standard transmission that was making him feel like they were a couple of kids. But right now all he wanted to do was take her parking. Haul her across the gearshift and into his arms, and simply kiss her and hold her for hours on end. And that was crazy, considering how old he was and considering the promise he had made. A promise he had sworn to himself he wouldn’t break unless she wanted to break it first.

“Ready?”

She opened her eyes slowly and sent him a baleful look.

He chuckled.

“What’s so funny?” she demanded, straightening so rigidly she unwittingly thrust out her breasts.

Dillon shrugged and returned his eyes to her face. “I’ve just never seen you look so out of your element, that’s all.” Except for their wedding night.

“Yeah, well, commit the scene to memory because I doubt like hell you’ll ever see me look this way again,” she grumbled irritably as she shoved her hair out of her face.
