Asher
Ryan steps into the office with a scowl. It’s close to nine o’clock and we’ve been working since early this morning. In addition to our usual duties for Buckley Enterprises, Ryan and I have been planning a charity ball to benefit the Friends Furever shelter. If we can raise a decent amount of money, we can keep it up and running until someone decides to buy it.
“Asher, you know I love you, but I need some sleep. We’ve been working around the clock all week, and I’m exhausted.”
“Yeah, yeah.” I huff, rubbing my temples with my thumb and index fingers. “You go on home. I just need to run the final numbers for 2018, and then I’ll get out of here, too.”
“I don’t have them. Josh promised he’d send them over, but I haven’t gotten them yet.” Ryan’s eyes are filled with trepidation, as if he’s afraid I’ll tell him he can’t go home.
“Alright, no problem. You head out, and I’ll just give Josh a quick call.”
His lips twitch like he wants to argue with me, but he shakes his head instead. “Okay. Enjoy your night, Ash.” Ryan runs out of the building so fast someone would think it was on fire.
With a frown, I scroll through my phone to find Josh’s contact. I still hate him for what happened with Esme all those years ago, but I’ve been swallowing my pride for the sake of the shelter. He’s not a bad guy, and we maybe could have even been friends... if he wasn’t the one Esme had turned to after I broke her heart.
I’ll never get over the image of Esme sobbing in Josh’s arms by the campfire, or the way he tenderly rubbed her back as she told him I’d broken things off just days before summer ended. I shake my head to clear my thoughts and press Josh’s number with a grimace. When he answers, I launch into my needs without any chance for small talk.
“Oh, I totally spaced on that, didn’t I? I’m at a friend’s for dinner, but I’ve got them with me now if you want to come by and pick them up.”
“Alright,” I sigh. At least if I have them with me tonight, I can finish up my work at home from the comfort of my couch. “Text me the address.”
I’m packing up my things when Josh’s text comes, and I recognize the address as the new development not far from here. I’d almost bought a house there myself, but I chose instead to move close to Esme’s special creek. Once again, that woman is shaping all my life decisions without me even noticing.
The drive over is quick, and as I pull up to the house, I think to myself that I should have moved here instead. The home is large without being obnoxious, and radiates a warmth that my house is lacking. It’s the perfect home for a family.
I leave the car running while I hurry up the porch stairs, not wanting to keep Josh from dinner with his friends.
