The rest of my day at work was completely unproductive because we spent hours trying to settle Mark down. To say he was upset that he didnât know about Dixon and I but Lynsey did is an understatement. Getting him to shut the hell up was more work than it has been to keep this secret for months. He didnât stop until Lynsey stepped up and whispered something in his ear causing his eyes to flutter closed. I donât want to know what it was, but it made his mouth snap closed faster than Iâve ever seen before.
After stopping at the fire station and leaving Dixonâs plug in his truck, I head home. I had to text him a little while ago and tell him I had to take it out. As good as it felt for a while, my ass was way too sore because of it to keep it in any longer. He told me that I needed to keep it in, I told him to fuck off. All that did was start banter that made me want to have him inside of me again.
When I pull into the driveway the last thing I expect is for Gunnar to be home. Itâs still early, he should be at practice. I drop my bag by the door, figuring if heâs home early heâs probably going to be in a bad mood. When I find him, heâs out on the deck in a hoodie and shorts with his feet propped up on a chair and the hood covering his face. The grill burns, crackling beside me and it doesnât take him long to realize that Iâm behind him.
âHope you donât mind but Iâm cookinâ us steaks for dinner,â he says without turning around.
âThat works for me. I wasnât sure what to make anyway.â
âWe have to talk, Kennedy.â The words and tone in his voice make my stomach drop. Weâve been skating around what happened for so long that I was beginning to think maybe he had forgotten and everything that had been going on was all in my head.
Closing my eyes I drop back against the side of the house and sigh. âI donât want to fight, Gunnar.â
âYou think I do?â he asks, raising his voice. My eyes fly open and find him turned around in his seat, staring at me. âI hate fightinâ with you, baby. It fuckinâ kills me.â
Reaching his hand out for me, he waits until I step forward and grab it before pulling me around the chair and down into his lap. I try to move out of his grip but he doesnât let me so I settle back against his chest. Raking his fingers through my hair, he moves it off my neck and over my shoulder. When his breath skims across my bare skin, I sigh. It feels like itâs been forever since Iâve been close enough to feel it and itâs something I miss like crazy.
âThis is crazy, Kennedy. Ten years of beinâ married.
