Description of Assignment

• Short-term: Students searched their homes and other places for things that come in groups of two. With their family, they created a list of those things and practiced counting them by twos. From the list, they chose one example to sketch and label with numbers to show the skill of counting by twos. Then they added a sentence below the picture to tell about the pairs (e.g., “Bicycle wheels come in pairs.”). The sentence provided the text for a page in the class book that was created at school. For the data collection tool that the students used in this assignment, see Appendix B.4.

• Long-term: The class was encouraged to explore the community in which they lived and to identify items that require counting by twos. When several items were identified, the class made a poster that represented their findings. As students talked with family members using the completed poster as a conversation starter, the teacher led class discussions about the usefulness of the skill of counting by twos. She then encouraged students to talk with adults they knew in the community about the importance of learning to count by twos.

Explore the idea of things that seem to come in pairs but aren’t really pairs (e.g., opposites).
