Hotbeds

The cold frame, developed centuries ago, could be called a solar-heated device to give it a modern touch. Add any other source of heat and you have a hotbed.

The original way to provide heat was to put a deep layer of fermenting manure under the soil. With electricity much more expensive today, the person with an available supply of horse, cow or chicken manure might consider trying it.

For a 3′×6′ bed, a cubic yard of fresh manure, with one-third of it straw or other litter, is needed.

Pile it 10-12 days in advance and dampen it if it is dry. In 4-5 days it should be heating. Turn pile, getting outer materials into center where they will also heat up. In 4-5 more days it should be ready.
