Chapter 10

Estelle was just the person Alexander wanted to see. Still, that didn’t take away the overwhelming dread weighing on his shoulders. He blew out slowly through his mouth and opened the door.

“Hey, handsome.” Estelle blinked and gazed up at him with a sultry expression as she stood in a thick eggplant-purple, knee-length winter coat. “Can I come in?”

Alexander gave Estelle a thin-lipped smile. “Yeah, come on in.”

Estelle’s lips pulled back in a wide grin.

“We need to talk,” he said and took a step back.

Estelle stepped in with her bright red heels that matched her lipstick. She peeled off the winter coat and threw it over the back of the loveseat, dusting snow over the chair and the floor.

“I don't think Emily will appreciate you messing up the floor.”

Estelle rolled her eyes and turned back to him in a red trench coat.

“You really like red.” Alexander took the winter coat and hung it up on one of the black hooks on the wall by the door.

“Where is she anyway?”

“Upstairs.”

“Perfect.”

When Alexander turned back around, he found Estelle naked. She was standing there in nothing but her red heels. Her hands were on her hips, and her red trench coat was pooled around her bright stilettos.

Alexander turned away. “Estelle—”

“Aww.” She brushed the tips of her fingernails along his shoulder blade, then cupped a hand against his cheek. “Don't be shy, Lex. It isn't anything you haven't seen.”

Alexander tensed, fighting a shiver. He grabbed Estelle's hand and put the other on her hip. He shifted her so her back was to the door, then he let go of her to pick up her trench coat. “I’m sorry, but whatever we had is over.” He thrust the coat toward her.

She blinked. Her dense lashes made her eyelids look over-burdened.

“You should leave.”

Instead of taking the coat, she brushed his hand aside and sashayed toward him. “You’ve never said no to me before.”

“We’re done, Estelle.” Alexander took a step back, but Estelle threw her arms around his shoulders and ran her nails over his scalp.

“Lex.” She cupped her hand against his cheek and tried to force his face toward her.

“Em’s upstairs. She may come down any time.” He didn’t really think she would. She was probably sound asleep in bed.

“She’s an adult. She should know how to make herself scarce.”

Alexander pried Estelle’s hands away from him and held her at arm’s length. “Estelle. Stop it.” He spun her around and draped the trench coat over her. “We’re done, and I’m not interested.”

Undeterred, she turned back to kiss him.

Alexander turned his face away. “Okay. I’ve said what I wanted to say. Em!”

Estelle’s lips twisted into a scowl. “You’re seriously breaking up with me?” She shrugged off the coat just as Emily came trotting down the stairs in dark blue sweats and a matching robe that hung below her knees.

Emily froze. Her gaze shifted to him, then back to Estelle.

“What are you staring at?” Estelle shouted. “Can't you see we’re having a moment?”

Emily looked over at Alexander.

He released Estelle while her attention was on Emily and made his way over to the stairs.
