CHAPTER 20

“It’s the medication.”

“What medication?”

I had no idea what Jenny was talking about — maybe because I wasn’t paying attention. I was busy searching the surrounding waters for the supply ship, which was what she was supposed to be doing. Micah and Devon were starboard, keeping an eye out; Mac was at the bridge, and everyone else was below deck, staying out of sight. Lars was back at McPherson’s base, monitoring the situation — prepared to send help should things go south.

So far, everything had gone smoothly. Disregarding my instructions, Mac had rented a yacht that was both large and fancy — there wasn’t a bell or whistle it didn’t have. There was even a small powerboat and a pair of Sea-doos sitting on the lower back deck. When McPherson got the bill, he was going to have a fit. The rental cost a small fortune — and that was if we returned it on time, which was probably not going to happen.

The silver lining was that its size made the yacht easy to spot as it bobbed on the water. The chances of the supply ship being able to pass up the opportunity being presented were slim to none. After all, we were talking about people who kidnapped and tortured children. They weren’t going to have qualms about taking a prize like the yacht, especially one that was dead in the water and manned by a guy in a flowery, tourist shirt, and four drunk, scantily clad women. Well, two really. Devon and Micah were wearing what was basically just a pair of strings with three triangles. Trinity had been more conservative in swimsuits for me and Jenny, sending designer one-piece suits with detachable skirts.

Now the only question was whether we were in the right place to be intercepted. We’d chosen a position in the direct path to the island from Subic Bay — far enough out to avoid other boat traffic, but close enough to the island to ensure we’d be spotted by the supply ship. Then Jimmy killed the engine. For the past two hours, we’d been bobbing around without power and we were losing position. If they didn’t show soon, he was going to have to restart the engine and move us back.

“Honestly, Taylor. You haven’t listened to a thing I’ve said.”

“I have too,” I argued. “You were saying something about medication.”

“Yes. The medication Griggs has me on.” Jenny took a sip of the water in her wine glass. “I think that’s the reason.”

“The reason for what?”

“The reason I can see the colors around Alex. I couldn’t before. The only thing that’s changed is the medication I’m on.”

That and a week of having her brain assaulted by Killer. I was surprised she hadn’t thought of that, especially after the fit she’d thrown about checking me out after my encounter with him. I hadn’t asked her whether Griggs had done any testing for brain trauma, but I hoped that he had. There had to be some explanation for her sudden ability to see the electricity sparking around Connors.
