IT WAS barely snowing now.

The Holly King removed the hood concealing his head as he reached the top of the steps. The article was something he wore out of affection rather than need. His lover had insisted he wrap up, thinking someone of such a small frame as him would grow cold and ill easily. Holly had been far too touched by the gesture to care about correcting Sergio.

That, and the fact that his lover was still unaware of Holly’s nature.

The name was something Sergio still gently teased him about on occasion. When they first met, Holly had given the first half of his title out of habit, not thinking of its feminine implications. Still, the name was appropriate, despite not fitting the current human culture’s masculine mindset.

Taking care not to make too much noise, Holly entered through the front door of the cabin and closed it gently behind him. Holding the hood out in front of himself, Holly shook the excess snow away inside the foyer before hanging it up on the coat rack. Next came his shoes, which Holly deposited in the shoe rack on the wall opposite where the coats hung.

The inside of the cabin was warm, which made Holly smile as he stepped lightly through the narrow hall leading to the den. A great roaring fire was lit in the fireplace. Light from it cast shadows throughout the room, making them bend and dance.

To Holly’s surprise, a figure lay stretched out on the floor in front of the sofa. A plate of butterscotch chip cookies was resting on the carpet next to Sergio’s knee, along with a mug of hot tea. Shaking his head, Holly felt the smile on his face broaden as he slipped down onto the floor next to where Sergio slept.

The movement stirred Sergio, and he opened his eyes as Holly reached for him.

“I thought you’d be asleep in bed,” Holly said as Sergio opened his arms to receive him. “I was trying not to wake you.”

“I wanted to wait up,” Sergio replied, nuzzling Holly like a house cat with the day’s growth of stubble covering his face. “How was your family meeting?”

Holly sighed, glad to be back in Sergio’s arms. “It went well enough,” he replied evasively. “I was happy for it to be over with, though. I kept thinking about you the whole time, up here at this cabin in the woods all by yourself.”

Sergio laughed softly, the sound a low rumble in his chest. “I’m glad you came,” he told Holly earnestly, pushing him away just far enough to look into his boyfriend’s eyes. “I hope the trip wasn’t too rough for you.”

Holly bent his head into Sergio’s hand as Sergio reached out to cup his face. “It was a breeze,” Holly said truthfully.

“During the holidays?” Sergio raised an inquiring eyebrow at Holly, who smirked back at him like a cat with the cream. “You seem to have the most amazing luck when it comes to travel, my love.”

Holly bit his lower lip to keep from giggling.
