Chapter 10

“Ciara wrote me a letter.” Kerry turned toward Minnie.

They were lounging in her bed, watching a rerun of a brat pack movie each of them had seen multiple times. Minnie smiled at him, then noticed his eyes were getting a bit teary. “That’s a good thing, right? Or did she give you a bunch of fanoozleshiz that you took me to meet her?”

“I had it in my pants pocket to bring so you could read it, then I forgot all about it when I went home and changed into jeans before coming here. But it was the exact opposite. It wasn’t like a twelve-step letter, it was just a side of her I’ve never seen. Very adult, mature, extremely happy for the two of us and hoped we’d make things official sooner than later because she really adores you. Told me you gave her a new direction to look at for careers and she was going to pound the pavement until she found a boutique that would hire her.

“It went on and on, and at the end, she told me she was sorry for all the wasted time she let slide between us. That isn’t a Ciara thing to say, so something tells me a little birdie pointed that tidbit out to her.”

Minnie shrugged. “I may have let it slip.”

“I do not know what you said, did, threatened, bribed, begged, but hell fires in August, I’m at a loss. She’s a changed person, just within a week. She can’t write or call our parents yet and was only able to write me because I’m her attorney technically. But she asked me at the very end to tell you “thank you” and “welcome to the family”.

Minnie inhaled deeply and let it out slowly, not knowing how to reply. Kerry’s face wasn’t giving her any clues to his feelings on the matter of the last sentence, or the one about giving her a ring. “Um, I, we...had a really long talk. Sounds weird but I kind of used fashion as an example. It’s a long story. But we never spoke about our relationship. As far as I knew, when I left, she probably assumed maybe I worked in your office building or even at the same firm. I never even told her you’d been here, or that I’d been to your home. I promise, Kerry.”

“What? Do you think I’d be mad? Are you kidding? I told you weeks ago that I was going to win you over. I’ve been trying all in this entire time. You’re a skittish and extremely independent woman, and I knew if I pushed too hard, too fast, I’d be kicked out of your life so fast it’d make my head spin.

“Speaking of head spinning. I’m starving.”

“Nice subject change, Andrews.”

He started to get out of her bed, only his boxers were on so every muscle in his arms and back flexed as he pulled his jeans back on, then turned toward her. He extended his hand.

“Come on, it’s almost eight, we shouldn’t have a wait anywhere.
