The walk back to campus couldn’t have been more different from before. Neither Lachlan nor I was talking and the silence was definitely not comfortable.

Snow was falling again and I stuck my hands deeper in my pockets, my stomach still churning in anxiety I thought I might actually be sick.

When I finally spotted the boarding house up the way, just across the street, I had to resist the urge to break into a run and go hide in my room.

I supposed I should have been excited. Stella had been right. There had been more than friendliness in Lachlan’s manner, more than simple strategic flirting.

Feel that…?

I couldn’t stop a warm shiver at the vivid sensations coming back from when he had touched my mouth earlier.

My movement drew Lachlan’s concerned gaze. “Are you still cold?”

I shook my head, hunching my shoulders.

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“No. I’m not cold.”

“My other question.”

I avoided his gaze. Yeah, like I was going to answer that question.

“Look, Ashleigh, we’ve been doing this dance all day.” He raked his hair back with his fingers somewhat in frustration. “And I think I might just explode if I don’t get this out.”

He stopped walking, turning to face me. “You need to know,” he declared, “the past couple of days have been—the brightest spot in what has been a very drab year for me.” The exasperated expression on his face softened when he added, “Because of you.”

I couldn’t look away from the light in his intense gray eyes as they held mine. I couldn’t stop the surge of elation in my chest, couldn’t stop the smile on my face, I had to bite it back.

One corner of his mouth turned up as he studied my expression. “And when you look at me like that, I can tell you feel something too.”

There was a battle of butterflies in my stomach. On the one hand, it was everything I was hoping to hear. On the other, it was the last thing I should be wanting to hear.

But when he moved closer, I jerked away.

“Am I wrong?” His gray eyes dimmed.

I cast mine down. “Look, Lachlan, you’re great but…”

“But am I wrong?”

“It’s not relevant.”

“It’s completely relevant!” I exclaimed in frustration. “You’re supposed to be with Wanda!”

He shook his head as if in incredulity. “That doesn’t matter.”

My jaw dropped. “Are you actually kidding me? Do you have some kind of bizarre observational theory about this too? You can flirt with girls to get special treatment. You can charm your way out of anything—”

“No—!” he tried to cut in but I was on a roll.

I gestured to all of him. “I should have known. You’ve definitely got to be way too smart for your own good if you’re even able to rationalize your way out of something like this. How on Earth could you possibly say this doesn’t matter?”

He hesitated. “Because—”

“Because what?”

“Because—”

“What?”

“Because I was going to break up with Wanda!”

Stunned at his outburst, I stopped way short. “What?”

Lachlan dropped his hands, blowing out a big sigh. He paused for a second before repeating what he said.
