Chapter 16

Esme~

As much as I’d wanted to see Raven’s interview when it aired, Robin had scheduled it right before my show, and since my show was live, I’d had to choose between watching the interview and getting fired for not prepping for my show. However, with most cable and satellite companies offering on-demand services, I knew that I could watch it later, though it still kind of sucked.

Raven had confessed to falling for me during our interview, and I wanted to see if I could catch the moment. I wanted to see if I could catch something subtle in his gaze or his smile. I wanted to see if his feelings had been captured on film. The idea made me feel positively giddy. Imagine having a tangible keepsake of those first moments? Those first emotions?

Walking onto the set, it was eerily quiet, and I noticed people shooting glances my way before turning their heads like they might turn to stone if they kept looking. I quickly reached one of the soundstage mirrors to make sure that I didn’t have a boob hanging out or something, and when I saw that I was more than presentable, I walked over to Kelly, one of our sound techs. “What’s going on?”

Her shoulders sagged, and I was actually worried that someone might have died. “Let’s get your show done, and I promise to tell you afterwards,” she answered. “I just…no one wants you distracted while we’re live.”

“Why would I be distract-”

“Alright!” Dax yelled loud enough to be heard downstairs. “Places, everyone!”

Kelly reached out, then squeezed my arm. “We’ll get it all sorted out after the show,” she said, throwing in a tentative smile. “Let’s get to our places before Dax has a fit.”

Today’s segment was about Fourth of July recipes, focusing mainly on desserts. We’d had three viewers submit their family favorites, and we were going to present them all. Now, while most community shows had an audience, I wasn’t popular for that just yet. However, I was allowed to be as creative as I wanted in order to really get the viewers involved. I often pulled random production members to do taste contests and things like that, so my show had some excitement, though minor.

An hour later, I had three completed desserts, but I knew that they weren’t going to last long. Whenever we had a dessert segment, as soon as the cameras stopped rolling, everyone in production raced to grab a piece. It was funny and sweet.

However, this time around, the enthusiasm was lackluster, and as soon as the segment was over, everyone had gone back to acting sketchy. Whatever was going on, it was bad.

I hurriedly walked up to Kelly to find out what was going on. “Kelly, do you have a minute now?”

She grimaced and didn’t even try to be subtle about it. “Yeah, of course.”

We made our way towards the makeup table, everyone else pretending that we weren’t searching for some privacy. While I wasn’t best friends with these people, we’d worked together long enough that their behavior was really beginning to worry me.
