Lydia has a letter she treasures, written by her foreman several years ago at a time when she was about to be laid off. It reads, in part: “I may have had some personal reservations concerning a woman’s ability to handle this type of heavy industrial equipment, but Lydia has consistently proven me wrong.”

Lydia’s children were eleven, ten, and five. She was supporting them on forty dollars a week from the union—her picket pay—and a very occasional child-support payment from her ex-husband. That was it. As a striker, she couldn’t even qualify for food stamps.
