The moment Kendall had waited for had arrived. She rolled onto her side to face Brent and propped her head on her hand. Her heart thumped just like it had that long ago day when he’d asked her out to dinner at the rodeo.

“Okay. Let’s talk.”

He nodded, his gaze following her heavy hair as it slid over her left shoulder to rest on her chest.

Her fingers curled into the soft picnic rug. She’d give anything to reach over and smooth away the tension bracketing his mouth. But until he said what he’d come here to say, she’d have no hope of easing his strain. She had to be patient. She’d waited so long for Brent to hold her, she could wait a little longer.

Last night in the kitchen everything had changed. Brent was no more immune to the passion and emotion that flared between them than she was. Now all she needed to discover was why he continued to fight their connection. From the gravity of his expression, kissing wasn’t the only thing off-limits, soon a relationship would be too.

She erased her own tension from her face and waited for him to speak. As surely as the aspen leaves would soon turn golden, she wasn’t leaving this rug until she had some answers.

Brent tunneled a hand through his hair. “I want to start by apologizing for what happened last night. I should never have kissed you.”

She held his gaze. “Why? I liked you kissing me and, while I might be out of practice, I believe you liked kissing me too.”

A spark shot across his eyes but quickly died. “You know I did.”

“So, what’s the problem?”

A deep sigh shifted his chest. “Dell … you and I just won’t work.”

She smiled, refusing to let his somber words dampen her conviction that her dreams were within reach. “Rubbish. We already work.”

To their left a rustle sounded as Rosie snuck over to steal Brent’s forgotten Rice Krispie. She carried the treat over to the shade near the horses, sank to the grass and chewed it.

“I’m serious,” Brent said.

“So am I. We work.” She made sure her voice remained matter-of-fact. She wasn’t giving Brent any room to disagree. “Okay, what’s the next reason why we can’t be together?”

“I’ll only … hold you back.” Brent’s tone was so low she had to concentrate to catch his words.

“Hold me back from what?”

“From doing what you’ve always wanted to do, design gardens.” He paused, pain hollowing his cheeks. “I did what my father asked and travelled. He wanted me to make sure Fire Weed is where I want to be. It is. I can’t leave the ranch … or Mom … again.”

Kendall’s brows met. “If you know Fire Weed is where you want to be why would you have to leave? And what’s it got to do with me designing gardens?”

“We won’t work … because you wouldn’t be here. It’s a long way between Harvard and Marietta.”

She sat up and crossed her legs. “How do you know about Harvard? I never told you about the offer to study my Masters there.
