Chapter 17

I push back the covers and sit up, darkness blanketing my room. I can’t sleep. Every time I shut my eyes, the image of Lucíano flying over the ledge fills my mind and I want to scream. Glancing at the clock, a crazy idea begins to take shape. It’s not even midnight yet—maybe I’m not the only one having trouble sleeping.

Creeping down the quiet hallway, each rapid thump of my heart makes me wince. I reach the landing at the top of the stairs and stop about halfway across. The arched doorway leading to the guys’ wing is closed, but is it locked?

I chew on my lower lip as I dance around in place. Maybe I should go back. The soft shuffle of approaching footsteps draws me closer to the door. I take a step toward it and jiggle the handle. The door pops open, and a dark figure fills the entryway.

“I thought I heard you out here, amor.” Lucíano’s lopsided grin makes my heart sing. After the horrible images flashing through my mind for the past hour, I can’t help but jump into his arms.

I squeeze him tighter to make sure he’s real. “I’m so glad you’re okay.” Pressing my ear against his chest, the sound of his slow and steady heartbeat calms the frantic beating of my own. He’s really alive. By some miracle, he survived the fall. Without a scratch.

My earlier suspicions bubble up and I pull away, standing back to get a better look at him.

“What’s the matter?” He cocks his head.

I glance down the hall to see if we’re alone. Light seeps through a few of the closed doors along the hallway. “Can we go somewhere private to talk?”

His dark brows knit together, but he nods and turns toward what I assume are the bedrooms. After taking only a step, he spins back around. “On second thought, the walls are pretty thin here.” He takes my hand and leads me back toward the entryway. “I know just the place.” His midnight eyes twinkle, and my throat tightens at the thought of those beautiful irises nearly extinguished forever.

Lucíano whisks me out the back door of the manor, the crashing waves of the ocean echoing across the pool deck. A full moon and hundreds of twinkling stars light up the sky, reflecting off the dark water.

“It’s so beautiful out here,” I whisper. Somehow I feel like the magic spell weaving around us will be broken if I speak too loudly.

He leads me toward the white sandy beach, his fingers tightly clenched around mine. The cool sand seeps between my toes, and it feels like walking on puffy clouds.

Lucíano stops and turns to me when we reach the shore, the sharp angles of his face illuminated by the moonlight in the most indescribably striking way. “You wanted to talk about something?”

I will my eyes away from his piercing gaze and focus on what I want to say. Of course now not a single word comes to mind.

His hand finds its way to my cheek, and I lean into the gentle caress.
