TWENTY-FOUR

VIVIAN

I have no idea how much time has passed when he carries me out of the bathroom. He brought me to an earth-shattering orgasm then he kept me pinned against the wall as he kissed me until my lips were raw. In between kisses, he kept whispering words in Russian that I so badly wanted to understand.

“Can I ask you for something?” I ask as he lays me down in his bed like I’m made of porcelain.

“Hm.” He pulls the covers over me.

“Would you get me a book to help me learn Russian? I’ll hide it under my mattress or something.”

He doesn’t answer as he rounds the bed to the other side then drops his towel to climb in with me. I don’t hesitate to ogle his manliness first though. “I can do that.”

I smile and turn over to my side to face him. But he has other plans as he slides an arm under my body and pulls me into his side. I try to keep the goofy grin off my face as I snuggle up to him. This is new for us. For me, really. Only a couple of times we’ve fallen asleep together and we were still partially embraced from having sex. This cuddling is intentional. He sought me out, bringing our bodies close together.

His heart is beating at a steady pace as I rest my ear over it. His hard chest rising and falling with mine. I’ve never felt so cherished before. To think that Sasha Rogov, son of the scariest man ever, is the one to foster such warm feelings inside of me. To help allay the painful scars of my tragic past.

I let out a yawn and begin to struggle to keep my eyes open. So many questions on my mind, but they’ll have to wait. I’m drained.

“When I was four, I found a dog running loose in the dead of winter.” I’m suddenly wide awake at the start of this conversation. Startled by his words. “Not too far from here. I could still see the estate.” He takes a breath, but I hold mine, afraid to make a sound. “It was below freezing with over a foot of snow. The dog did not even hesitate to come to me, seeking solace from a complete stranger. The way he pleaded with me with his eyes. As if he really had emotions like we do. So, I did what most normal children would do. I took him home with me.

“Even at a young age, I knew how cruel my father truly was. Evil at his core. I knew he would not let me keep the dog, and he would hurt it in some way. So, I tried hiding him on the other side of the estate until I could get one of the maids or servants or even one of my father’s men to help me figure out what to do with it. Everyone was too terrified of my father to help me.

“He, of course, found out about the dog.
