Gia

“Gia! Another ale,” one of the regulars yells across the bar. Work has been my only saving grace during this whole ordeal. After the club incident, Luke and I have barely had any time to talk, let alone get together. His impromptu sleepover that night was cut short due to keeping the plan. Waking up alone, seeing the dent in his pillow and the empty space brought me to tears. And his foundation work has been keeping him busier than ever. Add in the work he does for the crown and we might as well be passing strangers. A few times I’ve caught myself staring at his picture in a Google search or on the alerts I have set up every time his name gets mentioned in an article.

I miss the ease of our relationship. I miss the Luke I met back in Chicago, when everything was simple.

It’s slow tonight, only a dozen or so people occupying the tables and stools. Matt needed the night off, leaving me to fend for myself, so it’s probably best there’s a small crowd. Not that I wouldn’t be able to handle a packed house. I’ve done it before. It’s all a matter of making them come to you. And it helps that we don’t serve food. The more I can stay behind the bar, the better.

The door opens, drawing my curiosity for a moment as I clean up a few abandoned tables.

“Look who it is,” Reid says, smiling widely. Bryce and Connor follow behind him, sporting equal grins.

Oh thank God. My night just got better. Maybe Luke will show up. It’s odd to see the three out without their fourth.

Reid engulfs me in a hug, which I half-heartedly return. With everything going on, I don’t know if this is part of the act or if it’s real. But the contact is still welcome either way. Bryce and Connor follow suit, calming my mind even more.

“Hey guys. I’m so glad you’re here.” They walk to the bar and take up the empty seats in front of the taps while I place their usual drinks in front of them. “What’s up with you guys?”

“Just needed a night out,” Connor says, taking a sip from his mug.

“And to see your pretty face,” Reid adds, causing me to blush slightly.

I wipe my hands on the bar rag and roll my eyes. “Whatever. I look like a hot mess tonight. Apparently, I’ve forgotten how to hold on to things and spilled at least three drinks on myself.” Luckily, my apron absorbed most of the mess, although this is the last clean apron I found in the back, so if I have any more accidents, I’m on my own.

“You’re still beautiful,” says Bryce. “It’s why we keep coming here.”

Oh Lord. “Save your charms for an unattached girl. They don’t work on me.”

He laughs and leans forward. “Can’t blame a guy for trying.”

With them here, it helps to quickly pass the time. Between the jokes and laughs and the other customers, two hours fly by in a blink.
