“Hey, Mrs. Wright.”

“I thought I told you to call me Sandra?”

“Sorry. Habit. You want to talk to Caleb?”

“Always.”

“It’s bedtime now, but you can stay with us while I read his bedtime story.”

Theo sat on the edge of the bed, stretching out his long legs. He handed the tablet to Caleb.

“Hi, Grandma. Theo’s going to read a bedtime story.”

“So I hear. Is it going to be a good story?”

The boy’s face lit up. “The best. Theo reads stories the best, but don’t tell Mommy.” His face was solemn as he made his confession.

Sandra pantomimed zipping her mouth shut. Theo settled the little boy against him.

“You have to listen too, Grandma.”

“Of course.” Sandra winked at him. “I can’t wait to hear my son-in-law read for us.”

Theo cleared his throat, self-conscious at the scrutiny. Something told him he was being judged in every interaction with the Wrights.

“Alright.” He opened Caleb’s favorite book and began to read, concentrating on the precious child.
