My whole body's shaking as I exit Mark's apartment building through the service entrance, and the fact that I forgot to take a coat isn't helping. I run around the corner, afraid that Thompson or one of his guys will find me. But once I reach the next street over, and no one follows I stop dead in the middle of the sidewalk. I have no idea where to go. Have no idea why I even ran away. But my instinct to do so is still very strong.

The wind's gusting and it's beginning to drizzle. My heart's pounding in my throat, and I'm practically seeing snowflakes fall all around, covering the ground like they did on the night I tried to escape Reynard through the forest.

Pull it together, Nicole.

Taking a few deep breaths steadies me, though I can’t stop scanning the street left and right for any sign of Reynard, that's how strongly I feel his menacing presence. Maybe I should just stand right here, since the cops are coming. If he means to come after me, then they could arrest him right here and I'd have one less thing to worry about.

But that's childish thinking. Things only ever go that smoothly in fiction. In real life he'd probably slash my throat right here, and get away with it.

The street twirls around me at the thought, my heart racing faster than before.

This is no time to let my imagination run wild. I need to solve this, see where I stand, not come undone in the middle of the street.

I take another deep breath, hug my bag with the laptop against my chest and hail a cab.

I'll go see the lawyer first, and the cops second.

Between his wealth and his connections, I'm sure Mark will be free again by this evening. I just have to keep it together that long, and then all will be as it should be again.
