Chapter 11

Edison

Acouple of hours have passed since we started talking, and I can't shake this unfamiliar feeling in my chest. It's a feeling I've been searching for—one I’d almost given up on ever finding—yet here I am, sitting across from this goddess, and it's burning inside me like wildfire.

Being around Sydney always has me on the brink of either calmness or chaos. I've never met anyone who can drive me to the edge of insanity and yet also make me feel completely at ease.

She's strong, but her heart is bruised.

She just needs someone to treat her a little differently, love her a little harder, and reassure her a little more.

"Are you close with your mom?" I ask, knowing that’s who she turned to when her prick of an ex stupidly threw her away—yet I'm grateful because it means I get to sit here with her now.

"We are. It's not like I call her every day or tell her about every little problem I might have, but we go for brunch sometimes. Once a month, I go over for Mexican food. We have little traditions like that."

"That must be nice."

"Yeah, it is. My dad left when I was a baby—pulled the whole 'I'm just going out for milk' act and never came back. It was just me and my mom for a while."

"Jesus, it's no wonder you hate men." I can't help but laugh, but it pains me knowing that she's been so let down her entire life.

"Not true. I just hate certain types of men, and I have a low tolerance for bullshit. My mom met a good one when I was nine, Geoff, and he's been like a father to me over the past twenty years."

I'm glad not every man in her life has broken her, and I'm determined to be the one who proves we’re not all pieces of shit. She deserves someone who won't tear her down, who'll be there in the shadows, unshakable, even when she's ready to run.

"What about you? Are you close to your parents?" Sydney's pretty green eyes meet mine as she asks, but I hesitate, glancing down at the table and taking a deep breath before answering.

"They actually passed away a long time ago now."

Her eyes widen, and she brings her hand to her mouth in shock. "Oh my god, Edison, I'm so sorry."

"Don't worry. It's a normal question for anyone to ask," I say calmly, giving her a reassuring smile and hoping to ease her because I can see she thinks she just shoved her foot down her throat. "I was twenty-three when I lost my mom. She'd been sick since I was young, so we were all prepared."

"I can't imagine that makes it any easier."

"It doesn't, but at least we were able to say goodbye." I pause before taking a sip of my drink—water now as I have to drive this beautiful woman home safely tonight. "Then my dad left us peacefully in his sleep a few weeks later. It was like he'd given up and couldn't live without her, and his soul had to go find her.
