“It’s cold,” Jayden said as we sat on benches to put our ice skates on.

They were blue, plastic, looked horrible, and felt uncomfortable.

“It has to be cold so the ice doesn’t melt,” I said, chuckling.

Jayden gave me a pointed look that said I know that, which made me laugh harder.

“We’re not even on the ice,” he said. “Why does it have to be so cold in here?”

I shrugged. “To get us used to it? Ready?”

We had a two-hour skating session, although I doubted Jayden would last that long. Learning to skate was hard on the feet and legs, and the cold took some getting used to.

“Yes.”

I stood and turned to face Jayden, ready to help if he needed it. He stood, wobbled, and fell back onto the bench. I held my hand out. Jayden took hold of it and tried to stand again. I could feel his uncertain wobble through his grip.

“I’ve got you,” I said. “If it’s any consolation, it’ll be easier once you’re on the ice.”

Jayden didn’t look convinced. “It always looks so easy on TV.”

“Everything looks easy on TV.” I kissed him. “Take it slowly. It’s not far to the ice. Think like a penguin.”

“Penguin, right.”

Holding my hand, Jayden waddled to the edge of the ice rink. It was busier than I’d hoped. People of all different skill levels were on the ice, some clinging to the side for dear life, some waddling like a penguin, some just starting to glide while others raced around with confidence. There were even a couple of people doing small jumps whenever they had enough room.

“Can I watch for a minute or two?” Jayden asked.

There were benches to sit on and watch, so I guided him towards an empty one.

“You should skate,” Jayden said.

“I’m happy to wait with you until you’re ready to go on the ice.”

He grinned at me. “Maybe I want to see you skate, Daddy.”

I arched an eyebrow. “Is that so, little bird?”

He nodded.

“Are you sure you’re not just nervous about getting on the ice?”

“Oh, I am, but I also want to watch you for a little while. Please, Daddy?”

“All right.” I kissed his forehead and headed to the nearest entrance to get onto the ice.

I glanced back at him before I stepped on. He’d tucked his chin into his blue hooded jumper and had wrapped his arms around his chest, pinning his hands under his armpits. He grinned at me. He was so beautiful.

I started slowly. It had been a while since I’d been skating. After a couple of circuits, I moved closer to the centre so I could skate a little faster. I enjoyed gliding from foot to foot, sometimes turning so I was skating backwards, looking over my shoulder to make sure I didn’t collide with anyone. Once I was thoroughly warmed up, I left the ice and returned to Jayden.

“Impressive, Daddy,” he said before tugging me to him for a kiss. “When did you learn to skate?”

“When I was a kid. Mum was a competitive ice skater when she was younger.
