CHAPTER SIXTEEN

At precisely ten a.m., Winter walked toward Hiro, leaning on the arm of Ace. The slim column dress fit her petite frame beautifully, her perfectly shaped breasts peeking from the neckline. Mama Irene loaned her a strand of pearls with a diamond cluster hanging from it and pearls at her ears. Her dark hair, now cut and shaped by Keegan, still hung down her back in sweeping curls.

Hiro took in a deep breath seeing her, seemingly float, down the aisle toward him. His uniform was laden with heavy medals and ribbons, bringing the eyes of his teammates to his chest. They all had their fair share of hardware, but Hiro had been like a star quarterback on a failing team. He had two purple hearts, multiple commendation medals, rows of ribbons. It was astounding.

“It’s your wedding day, so I won’t kick your ass,” growled Cam, “but we’re going to talk about that fucking hardware on your chest.”

Hiro said nothing, a soft blush creeping into his cheeks. Winter looked so beautiful he couldn’t control the emotions building inside. She was a vision of innocence, angelic, and somewhat clueless. For a moment, he wondered if anyone had fully explained to her what was happening and if she understood. His eyes connected with Mama Irene, and he knew the answer. Looking back at Winter, tears trickled down his cheeks as she stood before him.

“Why are you crying? Have you decided not to marry me? It’s okay if you don’t want to,” she blurted out.

There were soft chuckles behind her, Hiro standing in front of her shaking his head. The woman who once refused to speak to anyone was coming into her own and freely speaking without prompt. He knew in his heart that she had a long way to go, but these baby steps were actually giant footprints.

“No, woman, you’re just so damn beautiful I can’t help myself.”

“Oh,” she said, frowning. Looking up at him, she smiled. “Oh. Thank you. You’re beautiful, too. Is it okay if I say that?”

“It’s okay,” smiled Hiro

It was only twenty minutes later when the priest proudly announced that they were husband and wife. The audience applauded, and Hiro looked down at Winter.

“What do we do now?” she said, feeling unsure of herself.

“Now, if you don’t mind, we’re supposed to share a kiss in front of our friends and family.”

“Okay. I don’t mind.” Hiro could only laugh, shaking his head. He leaned forward, gently kissing her as the cheers got slightly louder. Winter stepped back, her breathing heavy as she felt the familiar panic rise. It was Ace that stepped forward, grabbing her hand.

“It’s just friends,” he said. “Friends and family. That’s all.” She nodded at the other man, then turned back to Hiro.

“What happens now?”

“Now, we get to dance, eat, have cake, and celebrate. Later, we’ll go back to my cottage. Mama Irene and the others placed your things in the spare room. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“Okay,” he repeated, smiling to himself.

Winter had never been to a function with so many people who were so well behaved.
