Chapter 6: Vampires and Vixens
Giving myself one final look in the mirror in my small hotel bathroom, I nodded in approval. My usual long, wild hair tamed into straight locks, with just the pieces around the crown forming a small braid to keep any errant strands from my face. I found since drinking Cedricâs blood, my skin was smooth and completely blemish free, which meant minimal makeup. My look was complete with tinted lip gloss, a corseted white top that enhanced the tone of my skin and black leather pants.
Gone were my trusty converse sneakers, replaced by ass-kicking, black heeled boots. I looked tall, lithe and dangerous. Sliding a gold cuff over my tattoo, I chanted and sent a small stream of power to cover my anti-magic beekeeper ink.
Here, at least for tonight, no one in this town knew exactly who I was or what I had been up to. They did not know about my lack of a Familiar, my unchecked, untrained mess of magics, or about how I could throw off a shadow demon from drawing on forest treesâ life forces.
Yeah, no thanks. Soon enough I would be getting looks of confused apprehension, which were only slightly better than the looks of greed that cropped up.
Those frightened me the most. I could barely control my magic; I could not imagine the terror of someone else trying to manipulate my powers.
No, tonight was the time to live it up, to drink, dance, and have fun with no strings. After tonight, I would meet my task force team, get our assignment, and go to work. I could only hope my team would be strong, reliable, and friendly. Stretching my arms up, I took one final look at the room before heading to the elevator on my way to the club Mythmaker.
Three days passed since I had watched the replay of my draft. I had gotten notice two days ago that I was to travel to Boston. Tomorrow, I would get my official assignments.
I still had not received any formal word about the discussions that had happened the other night. Gareth had assured me that tomorrow morning, we would meet and discuss them before I was required to prepare for the assignment ball and dinner.
It was an event that had everyone dressed in their best outfits to dine and celebrate their new assignments and teams. I was dreading it. It didnât help that my mother couldnât leave her bees. But she knew how much I loved her, and Baldur and Gareth had promised to take pictures and keep her updated.
I made it all the way to the first floor without anyone getting into the elevator with me. Striding purposefully out across the fancy lobby my heels tapping loudly, I refused to acknowledge anyone. I knew I looked pretty good tonight that didnât happen often. Tonight, I was someone else, someone who was going to do what she wanted, screw everyone else. I left through the revolving glass doors out into the night.
